Globo
Editora Globo was a Brazilian publisher of comics.
History
Editora Globo is a Brazilian publishing company and a subsidiary of Grupo Globo (formerly known as Organizações Globo), responsible for the publication of magazines, newspapers, and books. The company has played a central role in the development of Brazil's print media, particularly through its long-standing connection with the O Globo newspaper and its involvement in comic book publishing.
The origins of Editora Globo trace back to Rio Gráfica Editora (RGE), founded by Roberto Marinho in 1952 as the comic book and magazine publishing arm of O Globo. Although it operated under the Globo media group, RGE could not initially use the name Editora Globo because that name was already registered by Livraria do Globo, a publishing house founded in 1883 in Porto Alegre, which had been operating as a publisher since 1928.
Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, RGE was instrumental in expanding the reach of comics in Brazil. O Globo had already introduced comic strips to its readers, starting in 1937 with O Globo Juvenil and in 1939 with Gibi, two popular comic book-style publications. On January 22, 1940, O Globo began publishing the The Phantom daily strip,s helping to promote its comics line.
RGE became the main Brazilian publisher of The Phantom, not only translating stories but also creating original content. In 1953, the [[Fantasma (RGE) |Fantasma Magazine]] was launched and ran until 1992. RGE was also responsible for publishing other major titles, including Spider-Man, which became one of its most successful series.
In 1986, RGE acquired Livraria do Globo, primarily to gain the rights to use the Globo name. Following this acquisition, RGE officially changed its name to Editora Globo, consolidating its identity within the larger media conglomerate.
Editora Globo continued publishing comic books at newsstands until January 2008. At that time, the company announced it would end its traditional newsstand comic book line and focus instead on the bookstores and specialty stores.
In January 2018, Editora Globo, Infoglobo (O Globo, Extra and others newspapers), and Valor Econômico were merged into a single company: Editora Globo, which came to own 21 brands. Later that same year, Grupo Globo began a unification process involving TV Globo, Globosat, Globo.com, and Globoplay under the initiative called "Uma Só Globo" ("One Globo"), aiming to consolidate their previously separate operations into a single structure. The completion of the first phase of this unification was officially announced in 2021.
