The Flaming Skeleton represents ancestor Phantoms.

Fictional Character Biography

When the 21st Phantom goes into what the Llongo call "The Woods that Make Men Mad," then fights a lion, he hallucinates being scolded by his father, the 20th Phantom. His father catches fire and becomes a skeleton, engulfed in flames, and still haranguing his son, telling him "Your arrogance has been your undoing!"

Much later, when the Phantom ignores Mozz's warnings and rides off toward Gravelines Maximum Security Prison to rescue Savarna, his first night's sleep is interrupted by the Flaming Skeleton.
