Vacul is an old castle, now in ruins, in Carpatia, a country in Eastern Europe.
In the doorframe of the cellar door to the ruined castle is a silent alarm placed that goes off when the door is opened. The alarm signal is transferred by an antenna in the castle tower and through ultra longwave radio signals the alarm reaches the Phantom in the Skull Cave in the Deep Woods.
