"The Magician" is the 15th episode of the Phantom 2040 animated TV series.
Plot summary
Sagan stumbles across records of a mysterious white-haired man who was friends with the Phantom 20 years ago, in the time of Kit's father. Her data search for information about him alerts Graft who upon reporting the lead to the Madisons is informed by the Maxwell Sr consciousness that it is his old friend Steele. Mr Cairo tips Sagan off where to look in the physical archive for information about the man as all databases have been disabled for searches for this man. Sagan finds out that the man was a stage magician called "The Spetacular Steele" in 1995. Graft and Maxwell Jr seek up Steele to find the Phantom, but are driven back by illusions.
Steele realizes that something is going on and seeks up the Phantom. He had been a crime fighter using illusions, but when biots started getting popular he retired from crime fighting as biots were immune to his illusions, manufacturing weapons for the 23rd Phantom instead.
Realizing that Graft and the Madisons will next seek out his mansion, where he stores sensitive equipment and information that could lead them to the Phantom, Steele leads the way there to stop them. At the mansion Graft tries to ambush them, but they destroy the place and bring with them the upgraded old car of the 23rd Phantom, known as Hero.
