Herman Hedning

"Herman Hedning" (literally "Herman the Heathen") is a Swedish comic strip created by Jonas Darnell in 1988. It started as a back-up comic in Fantomen (and has also been published in some of its sister publications in other countries).

Being closely connected to Fantomen and its editorial staff, the strip contains several references, jokes and parodies aimed at The Phantom.

"The Avenger of the Sea"

"Havets hämnare" (literally "The Avenger of the Sea") is a 10-page story that parodies the 1st Phantom's origin. It includes references to Bengali, the Oath of the Skull, the Bandar, the Skull Cave, the Skull Throne, the Chronicles, Old Jungle Sayings, the minor and major treasure room, and of course The Phantom himself – who appears as a ghost, only concerned with guarding the treasures. The whole story turns out to be a dream however.

First published in Herman Hedning 5/2000, later reprinted in the hardcover book Svammelsurium.
